The Science of the Soul: The Story So Far.
The science of the soul is a latent idea in that it begins with religious texts and it begins a long time ago, when man first began to wonder where he came from and what created all this wonderful stuff on earth. It may have been the greatest idea of its day to challenge the industrial revolution, space travel and nuclear physics in its scope and impact. It must have filled people with wonder and amazement just to think about an all powerful being which brought the world and its inhabitants to life. But now we have passed all these scientific milestones; evolution, gravity and physics we must now, I believe attempt to answer the greatest question of all: can the existence of God ever really be proved in a scientific context and nestled inside that question is another question: does the spirit, the soul exist and therefore an afterlife? Here in this document are the first tentative steps to answer that question, largely born of visions and spiritual experiences, but also from reading certain books and thinking a great deal about how the universe functions.
The science of the soul then should move from ideas of mysticism and the unknown and into the known universe and its laws. It was never enough from my early interaction with the church that followers should just blindly accept that the Bible held the “Truth” and everything you ever wanted or needed to know about God was contained in The Bible. That it contained the answers to the very big questions. I needed more and I guess every atheist started with those same questions and were left wanting when they attempted to find the answers in the Bible. I know I did. But finding a scientific basis for the existence of God and of a soul is no mean feat. To start with I had a great desire, what intellectuals call being a ‘seeker’ of knowledge, which derives from Eastern mysticism.
To start with we have to deal with the belief of much of the scientific world that the human brain with its vast collection of neurons and connections collected together, all functioning simultaneously constitutes a consciousness. And that consciousness as we know it in the 21st Century is the scientific word for the soul. This means the human soul is nothing more than the function of chemicals, acting on biology, producing behaviour with a behavioural feedback system which reacts to external stimuli, via the five major senses. We are nothing more than biological machines with parts, and chemicals making us move and think and so on. This means that we can finally detach ourselves from God and having a soul. The questions of where we came from and where we go when we’re dead are secondary, but no less important. For example reports of near death experiences show a tunnel, a light and relatives at the end of the tunnel with a heavenly light behind them. This has often been translated as the brain shutting down and I offered the explanation that there are a specific group of memories and ideas that kick into action when dying in order to ease the transition between life: experiencing everything and death: experiencing nothing. Following this, the sequence of the tunnel and friendly faces at the end of the tunnel will slowly fade away. Eventually we will fall into absolute oblivion. I also postulated a number of years ago that the universe as it stands would not be so wasteful as to grant eternal life in heaven or hell to anyone. That doesn’t seem to fit in with the way nature functions. Its tendency is either to destroy completely or to reuse and recycle. It’s a nice idea that God loves us so much that He saves us. He saves our consciousness and then plants it into an alternate universe where we continue to experience life pretty much in the same way as we did on Earth. But unfortunately God is a force of nature with no conscience at all, when it comes to killing people in all manner of brutal and painful ways. I think this myth of heaven comes from our overwhelming desire to survive no matter what. And that it’s simply a survival instinct that keeps us alive as we navigate our way through a dangerous environment. If not beasties and angry neighbours, then cars and cancer. There is more evidence of reincarnation than there is of the existence of heaven. What if human life was precious? What if promises of human beings as special, with special protection, special treatment above other creatures were true? We already know that the laws of physics evolve like everything else that’s alive. That we are able to be driven in our evolution by the laws of the atom and sub-atom explains a great deal about the nature of our intellect. Because in the biological machine we call our bodies there is a massive amount missing from this as the final explanation of the soul. Physics. Where do those pesky little atoms and sub-atomic particles fit into our behaviour? They are there. They are essential to our bodies and minds. They connect us to the rest of the environment. So if we are to truly understand the human mind we must first understand the basic laws of physics. And that is something that we have not achieved yet. We can delve so far into this tiny world of tiny forces and things and then we can go no farther. And that’s as far as I was able to go. Because I don’t have enough information I was not able to connect the dots and create a theory of everything for the soul and for God. But I can make a start.
Mass Functioning.
The science of the mass movement of people and the way humanity acts as a group is where I made the most progress. In 1998/99 I kept seeing a vision of a swirling mass of souls around a central entity, until one day I had that eureka moment and realised I was seeing visions of God. That God was a planet (which I called The Breaksphere) and swirling around him were particles, and those particles contained souls. Those particles were then being blown around by weather systems within the swirling galaxy-like system and that this weather explained mass human behaviour. It was a real breakthrough. But there is one major problem with the theory that I cannot overcome even in a strictly theoretical way. Why and how can a soul exist in two places at once? The theory states that it is the swirling galaxy with its God in the middle which pushes humanity around in weather systems. But this would have to mean I exist in two places in the universe at once. Firstly here in this body, in this town and at this time in history. And secondly out there somewhere in the universe being pushed around. Because behaviour comes from the atomic and sub-atomic forces acting upon the human body there was always the possibility that a kind of butterfly effect was causing my actions and reactions to the things happening in my life and I was not really in control. In this theory, control is even farther removed from me and my decision making processes than many realise. In fact there are so many possible causes of my own thoughts outside of my own consciousness and outside of my immediate life, that we could all be victims of weather and nothing more. All we have is the illusion of autonomy when in reality it doesn’t exist. This was a frightening prospect.
Think about it. When was the last time we actually made an autonomous decision? I think about sex because my hormones demand it. My hormones can be triggered by watching television or walking down the High Street and seeing a beautiful woman walk past. So if I decide to have sex that day, have I decided anything? Have not just given in to a chain of events? To illustrate the point there is a monastery in Japan up in the mountains. It became renowned for the monks ability to stick to strict codes of chastity and so on. But as the decades passed, the city and development crept up the mountain. Now instead of being hundreds of miles away from civilisation, they were now a couple of miles away. The monks found it more and more difficult to stick to their vows and soon enough the monastery lost its reputation for its strict adherence to their vows. Drinking, drug taking and sexual impropriety became more common place as the cities and towns grew and encroached on their quiet corner of the world. It was the proximity of comforts and pleasures that killed the monastery’s reputation, not mind over matter. You can apply several different aspects to the illusion of autonomy. The thoughts and actions of others and its impact on you. The weather (hot, cold, wet, etc). The economy and money. Sensory perception and interpretation of incoming stimuli. Health. Atomic and sub-atomic forces affecting you and your behaviour. The intake of minerals, vitamins and other organic and non-organic materials – the amount, frequency and the pollutants we take in by accident or as the result of living near exhaust outlets such as factories or busy roads. Food and drink. The physical ability of our brains to create the right environment and chemical mix for clear thinking. All these things push and pull you and your thinking, removing autonomy and creating robot-like beings with little or no autonomy. In philosophy there are many branches of this kind of thinking, the closest one being Hard Determinism. Wikipedia, says that `Some proponents of emergentist or generative philosophy, cognitive sciences and evolutionary psychology, argue that free will does not exist. They suggest instead that an illusion of free will is experienced due to the generation of infinite behaviour from the interaction of finite-deterministic set of rules and parameters. Thus the unpredictability of the emerging behaviour from deterministic processes leads to a perception of free will, even though free will as an ontological entity does not exist.1, 2.
it goes on to say;
`...it is suggested, the experience of free will emerges from the interaction of finite rules and deterministic parameters that generate infinite and unpredictable behaviour. Yet, if all these events were accounted for, and there were a known way to evaluate these events, the seemingly unpredictable behaviour would become predictable.
But back to the problem of being in two places at once. My first thoughts were that somewhere in the universe intelligent life was ‘managed’ by a system which employed a central entity (the God planet) which would ‘picture build’ by connecting to individual souls within the system and seeing through their eyes for minutes or seconds. It would do this millions of times a minute and then adjust things as it saw problems. This explained several aspects of the nature of God. Firstly God was not omnipresent. Its view of the universe was limited and therefore its powers of intervention were also limited. Secondly God was not conscious like a human being was. It could only function in a similar way to Earth in the Gaia hypothesis, first proposed by James Lovelock – as a cybernetic system. This meant that we could not have a ‘personal’ relationship with it, which is why when we pray God rarely answers in person. It also means that God is not a loving thing which loves us all individually. It cannot and does not love. It only leaves nature to take its course, which results in random acts of brutality, such as people starving to death in a dust bowl in Ethiopia – Christian or not. I saw this disc as being split along its side, by a polarity with north and south, that intellectual power and civilisation is gained to those souls above the line and a life of crime, poverty and distress to those below the line. As the weather systems forced movements up and down people would rise and fall. Civilisations would collapse like the Roman Empire, while other mass groups of individuals would rise like the British Empire, all being ‘blown around by the wind’
And I get some support for this theory from this passage from the Bible in the visionary dream of Ezekiel:
: 15 - 21. `As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. This was the appearance and the structure of the wheels: they sparkled like chrysolite and four wheels looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not turn about as the creatures went. Their rims were high and awesome and all four rims were full of eyes all around.
When the living creatures moved the wheels beside them moved and when the living creatures rose from the ground the wheels also rose. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go and the wheel would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When the creatures moved, they also moved, when the creatures stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels´.
Ezekiel explains a strange vision of creatures reacting to the movements of wheels. This is exactly as I see this theory of God, the God planet and the swirling mass of souls moving around it. It is spookily similar.
None of this means that Jesus didn’t exist and that He didn’t perform miracles. It is merely a more brutal and basic understanding. That infinite love, wisdom, and omnipresence are gifts we have bestowed on God rather than gifts that He actually possesses. I am of course unsure how the system may intervene in human affairs, except to offer divine inspiration to individuals, or send people breakthrough dreams like Descartes fabled dream of the modern scientific method, delivered to him via a chorus of angels. I know that healing can occur through prayer and laying on of hands, because I have experienced it. I also know that dreams can be precognitive because I have experienced that also.
And what of precognition, one of the eleven spiritual gifts? I know that I saw 9/11 before it happened, so I know that there is an element of the future which is fixed and destined to happen. The modern understanding of physics is something which I understood independently before having it explained to me by physicists on documentaries and in magazines and books. That the immediate future knits together just ahead of us in time and that it unravels behind us as time passes. When seeing the future are we not just interpreting what pulls on our consciousness as the future forms ahead of us? My theory is that our brains have already begun to build the neural networks to experience the future event. The 9/11 event had a catastrophic psychological effect on me, so this would effect my brain and phenotype genes as my mind was shaped by stress as I had a second breakdown in the autumn of 2001. Because my life was so badly affected by 9/11 my brain was able to see what lay ahead of it as the universe prepared to unfold its secrets ahead of time. So this is not an intervention by God. It is merely a side effect of the natural passing of time. But did God “design” the universe so that it runs automatically ahead of us? It is possible that a designer could have packed the universe into a Pandora’s box and then unleashed it at the big bang, only for it to follow a predetermined series of events that were designed into the compacted version of the universe, thereby creating a system which only needs tweaking from time to time? And this is where my early, rudimentary ideas of a science of God falls down. If God is a planet it means that God is in the universe and not outside of it, which also means that God as I see it, must have been ‘created’ and designed like everything else. But maybe God existed outside of creation at the start and inserted itself into it later?
Then there is time and history. It is possible for Earth to have been created in six days? My thoughts on this was yes it is possible. Could the Earth have been created with fossil remains already there? If time ravels and unravels as it passes then perhaps the dinosaurs only existed in a diluted form which only came together as fossils later when we humans discovered them. Because as time passes, that past decays and disintegrates. So as we stand at the present and look backwards how far have the dinosaurs and other archaeological artefacts been in ‘unexistance’, only ever having come together as a coherent whole a short period of time away from the present?
To answer this question we have to know what the nature of reality is and how many realities there are, because physicists have been saying recently that there are millions of universes with lots of slightly different realities running along side ours. I dispute this. What I believe is that there is only one universe with all its dimensions of up, down, backwards, forwards and time, with strings of energy coming together to form points of matter or light or whatever. These strings become entangled with each other, creating mass. Each one comes from a new dimension, not mentioned above: from within. Through tiny holes in space time, they shoot up and into existence from inside themselves. There are many points that only ever come together at one point in time at a time, but at many points in space. So particles are the cross over points of a tapestry of strings of energy. All these points then gather to stitch together to form the present. No other universes can exist on their own, because I believe there can be only one rendezvous point at a time.
All this means that as we stand looking backwards in time, the flesh and blood dinosaur never existed. Only the fossil form existed. However, if you were to time travel back to the dinosaurs they do exist there (but only to you at that moment of observation), because of the presence of a conscious being observing the dinosaurs (of course the dinosaurs were also conscious and experienced themselves and others). So in a way Earth is only seconds, weeks, years old at any given point in time, depending on which way you want to observe the universe. Either you believe the dinosaurs existed millions of years ago, or you believe the universe is only seconds old. That’s the beauty. It’s your choice, because both are true.
Mass Death for Mass Life
In order to make sense of history is it possible to create a model in a super computer of all the forces acting upon human beings and predict future human behaviour? The Nazis for example could have been explained by a mass heated build-up of human weather, creating chaos by dragging in neighbouring, smaller build-ups. The deaths of millions of people in the Chinese and Russian purges of the 20th Century could have been the actions of unseen forces with a purpose. Via this macro and hidden view of human behaviour, mass deaths should perform two functions. Firstly it should push the processes of birth and rebirth towards evolving into something new. Each time we are reborn we could be bringing with us the lessons of the past, building up step by step towards a new human consciousness. Secondly it should dramatically reduce the growth of population. Stalin, World War II, the Holocaust, Avian flu epidemics and so on, all contributed to population reduction of hundreds of millions of people. But think about where population numbers would be without them. I reckon we could easily add another billion souls to Earth’s population by now. Also in order to save humanity from itself the system would have to kill and rebirth millions of souls more than once, to evolve out our dangerous behavioural traits before humanity kills itself. This would mean one simple trait – selfishness, must be replaced by another simple trait – collectivism. In other words although we have individual intellectual power, this has never really been translated as collective intellectual power in its truest sense. Yes, as a collective we can build a vibrant economy for example. But as a mass movement of individuals we can only build a vibrant economy to benefit a few. The rest are buried in poverty. We cannot act together to achieve a collective goal very easily. We continually act as individuals, sometimes acting together by accident or design. But in order to survive into the distant future, I believe we need to synchronise with each other and think and act as a group. This means that our inbuilt selfishness needs to go. Enter the mass death and add into the equation the shortness of time to change. Many estimate that we will be in real environmental danger within the next one hundred years. So we need to act within the next one hundred years, which is why the giant system of life, that swirling galaxy of souls with God in the middle may push a mass death onto humanity in order to slow things down a bit. In this way God intervenes to save humanity in the longer term. It would kill the global economy, and it would let survivors recover. It could be a mass death where vast numbers of souls all die at the same time. Some theorists have postulated the theory that runaway climate change would cause a global conflagration. This is what I believe the Book of Revelation is describing. The second coming of Christ that “every eye shall see”. Christ descending from heaven in a chariot. The Bible says that there will not be any memory of what life was like before and that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. This describes a mass death. And I believe that is exactly where we are heading.
A few years ago I battled for an explanation for the holocaust. I felt injured and baffled by it. And this theory explained it to me. That in order to rush towards salvation certain individuals were given the power to exterminate others at will. Its thin I know. But what if there were these alternate explanations for everything? Perhaps psychotic killers like Stalin were programmed by the God planet to cut the population? Perhaps all genocides perform this task for humanity? It is a reason for horrible, inexplicable things to happen. It revealed God’s thinking to me. And as I was in the thick of psychotic, magical thinking at the time I could believe in it and it would ease me into believing that God was in control and He did things like this for a reason, thereby explaining my own extreme suffering at the time.
The holocaust is a very specific example. The persecution of the Jews pushed millions of Jewish people back into Palestine to create the Jewish state of Israel. This in turn causes a conflict between the Arab world and the Jews. This in turn leads to 9/11 which leads to the Iraq war and the Iraq war causes world leaders in politics and business to begin the switch from a carbon economy to a renewable economy, thereby creating the breeding ground for avoiding the worst of climate change. Everything has its turn and its place and nothing is wasted in a design of cause and effect, sacrificing many lives for the sake of the group. A frightening reality – if it’s true. It could well be synchronistic and therefore just the coincidence of a series of horrific events causing a more agreeable outcome. But what if it’s not? What if it is evidence of a greater process of right and wrong? Evidence of a planned future not a random one. It would be a big deal to discover this as a real prospect. A process of underlying reasons for everything, good and bad and maybe evidence of planning in human history and the future.
But what is coincidence? I believe coincidence is a symptom of how sub-atomic particles affect matter and the wider universe. It is like a knock-on effect. Small patterns of behaviour repeated at higher levels of size. Like electrons revolve around their nuclei. Well so do planets around their suns. Coincidences and synchronicity are the physical signs of the structure of matter and the universe and without it the universe could not function. Coincidences are shadows of that structural behaviour. A behaviour that shows up in thoughts and metaphysical ideas; things that don’t exist accept in theory. Even this connects the metaphysical to physical, because they both belie the fundamental behavioural structures of the universe. This point is illustrated perfectly by two well known experiments. Firstly The Riemann Hypothesis, in which Reinmann, a German mathematician mapped out all the positions of all the known prime numbers in a graph. It was later discovered that the distribution of frequencies of sound coming from a quartz ball, when hit with a metal ball bearing corresponded with the distibution of prime numbers. The second experiement of interest has stumped the team at MIT who set it up. They built a computer which generated random numbers. They had several of these computers spread around Western countries, but mainly in the US. They were studying what random really meant when the 9/11 attacks took place. Just before the attacks there was a small spike in non-random number generation. During and directly after the attacks those non-random numbers just kept going up. Some at MIT believe that the computers were effected by people switching on their televisions and tuning into the same event. It remains a mystery. In fact its such a mystery that the team put a request out for anyone with the slightest idea what was occuring to put forward their theories. Both of these experiments, I believe point to the non-randomness of coincidence and the underlying structure of the universe.
I don’t know whether I am onto something or not. And my recent thinking is that human beings do move in mass movements reacting to events around them. I believe that human beings act together like molecules in a rain cloud. They group together, they rise, they fall, they clash and they crash and they die. But whether there is a place in the universe in which souls exist and whether God is a thing; a planet-like formation I don’t know. And there really isn’t a way to find out either. What can be discovered in the science of the soul, however, is that we do behave as if we are being blown around by weather systems and I also believe that this system exists in the smallest parts of our bodies as well: the atoms. The next big discoveries are these two things: a theory of everything currently being chased by physicists all over the world, including at CERN. And secondly the way that the atomic and sub-atomic worlds affect the way we behave. The second one will lead to new treatments in medicine and mental health and we may well discover that we are indeed nothing more than machines plugged into a giant galaxy system, which pulls us around our lives. It is both awesome and terrifying at the same time. But all we need to do to survive and make our world a better place to live is to think more about the fate and the future of all humanity and not just focus on our own selfish needs. That is the simple message that comes out of all this trouble, and death and despair.
